Meet Chrystia

Raised on a farm in Peace River, Alberta, Chrystia Freeland has never backed down from a fight

As a journalist, she evaded Russian spies, covered the collapse of the Soviet Union, and exposed oligarchs, billionaires, and the economic policies that hollowed out the middle class around the world.

After watching Pierre Poilievre and Stephen Harper put those economic policies into action, she moved back to her adopted home of Toronto—three young kids in tow—and ran for public office in 2013.

Winning a contested nomination and competitive by-election, she then joined a third-place Liberal Party, in the back corner of the House of Commons, with a promise to fight for working Canadians.

When the Liberals formed government in 2015, Chrystia became Trade Minister, where she fought for Canadian jobs and saved Canada’s trade deal with the European Union.

After being appointed as Foreign Minister, she led Canada’s fight against Donald Trump to protect NAFTA, our trade deal with the United States and Mexico. A skilled negotiator who would be named Foreign Policy’s Diplomat of the Year in 2018, Chrystia became a personal target of Donald Trump—but secured a good deal for Canadians anyway.

When Trump imposed steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada in 2018, Chrystia fought back again—and she won again.

In 2019, Chrystia was named Deputy Prime Minister, where she led Canada’s pandemic response and protected Canadians and Canadian businesses from the largest recession since the Great Depression.

In 2020, she then became Finance Minister—the first woman in Canadian history to be entrusted with that role. As Finance Minister, Chrystia led Canada’s recovery from the COVID recession and delivered historic expansions of our social safety net, including $10-a-day childcare and affordable dental care for 9 million Canadians.

With Donald Trump preparing crushing tariffs on Canada and Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives ready to give in, our great country needs a leader who won’t back down.

Chrystia is running to be Leader of the Liberal Party as the next Prime Minister of Canada because she knows how to fight—and how to win.

Chrystia Freeland will fight for Canada—and Chrystia Freeland will fight for you.
