Smaller, More Effective Cabinet and Prime Minister’s Office

Making government more efficient–without impacting the benefits and services Canadians count on–is essential. We must use tax dollars responsibly.

Leadership starts at the top, and that’s why, to start, we must right-size the Cabinet and the Prime Minister's Office.

As Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland will:

  1. Reduce the size of Cabinet to no more than 20 Ministers – a 50 per cent reduction from the current Cabinet. A Cabinet led by Chrystia Freeland will be more focused and more effective–balancing regional diversity and breadth of experience to ensure Ministers are given the space to meaningfully contribute to governing. This Cabinet will revive empowered regional Ministers, and it will be supported by Ministers of State.

  2. Reduce the size of the Prime Minister's Office by 50 per cent to restore a true Cabinet government. By ending the overreach of the Prime Minister's Office, Chrystia Freeland will empower Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, and all Canadians to more meaningfully contribute their ideas to make our country better.

These two actions to restore trust and confidence in the government are just the first steps in Chrystia’s plan to make government more effective and efficient to deliver services faster and better.
